Berth Jack! His attitude toward the "tremendous" Salt Palace deserves to be applauded. I don't appreciate having any of the people downtown telling me how many programs I can see at the SEC any time of year. Therefore, if the Salt Palace Board of Directors decide to push this much further, I propose all the students of the University boycott the Palace and all the events brought in. Since many of their shows cater to the family or the teeny-bopper, we won't miss much anyway. Rita Moffett give us a chance at being students since we attend class and study too. It's 'too bad because we participate par-ticipate in an extracurricular activity that we should be condemned. We do not, and would not think of persecuting you for being on the newspaper (which ASUU give money for), or think of questioning your intelligence in-telligence (no matter how we felt). Being in athletics gives us a opportunity to develop physically. physi-cally. Thus being a student, and a participant in athletics, we have a chance to be well-rounded individuals, indi-viduals, developing both mental and physical resources. A well-rounded well-rounded individual is what the University is trying to produce and therefore athletics is as important to the University and McCarthy book Editor: I have read and listened with combined amusement and horror of events surrounding the rise of Joseph McCarthy Memorial Fund. I, too, agree with Mr. Holt that it is a sorry fact that so few know so little about McCarthy and his crusade. I became concerned about this lack of depth in my personal store of fact. I consider myself a somewhat conservative person politically and had never thought too much about McCarthy Mc-Carthy at all. A new book has just been published purporting to be a monumental work about the McCarthy era and his deeds: "The Nightmare Decade" by the award-winning award-winning journalist Fred J. Cook. The book has been praised by Conservatives and Liberals alike. It is equally unkind to both in its judgements, incidentally. The conclusions the book makes should open the eyes of any reader with a grain of intelligence. in-telligence. Fact: McCarthy was perhaps the most dishonest person in American public life in this century. He relied on the worst in human nature to support himself and gain followers. He broke N every rule of decency one could name. He constantly used "Communism" as a catch-phrase to attack and descredit anyone who opposed his rise to power. His real target were liberals, moderates, and even the few' conservatives who dared speak out against his excesses. An interesting fact is that when the Republican administration finally grew tired of his charade Richard Nixon and William Rogers played important roles in discrediting McCarthy, while attempting to do as little damage to the Republican party as possible. McCarthy's deeds are fantastic. It makes the mind boggle at how the entire nation kow-towed to him out of fear of being named as a "dupe" or "Communitst sympathizer." The liberals couldn't find hiding places fast enough. Most of the people who spoke out against McCarthy at any point were a few courageous conservatives, whose foolishness cost them their political careers. I feel the democrats share a great deal of shame from the events during this period. McCarthy never proved' anything-not anything. He found nary a single subversive or radical. Mr. Holt dismisses those who McCarthy libeled and slandered as not really being hurt permanently and insinuates that these "pinkos" now have President Nixon's ear. He forgets or perhaps never knew of the scores of innocent people who lost their jobs during the hysteria of this period. I challenge Mr. Holt or any of his friends down at the John Birch v Society to refute with facts (something the Senator never used in his ravingsrj anything in Mr. Cooks' book on this amazing period in our political history.
