Show Advisory Center involves undergraduate I Undergraduate students in psychology are experimenting exper-imenting with a new way to bridge the communications communica-tions gap between students and the department. Under the sponsorship of the Undergraduate Committee, advanced students of psychology have set up an Advisory Center to serve as a clearing house for graduate school requirements, independent indepen-dent study projects, colloquiums and lectures. The Advisory Center, located in Annex 1 1 7, ext. 6125, is open 10 a.m. to noon weekdays. All advisors are seniors in psychology. They have done independent study, and know professors and departmental procedures. The six advisors currently cur-rently working at the center are all volunteers. Carla Smith, a senior in psychology and advisor at the center, said that because graduate school is a necessity for students of psychology who want to work in their field, it is important to begin planning for graduate school as early as the sophomore year. Mrs. Smith said the Advisory Center is collecting catalogues from every university in the country offering advanced degrees in psychology. j Through the Advisory Center, graduate students , may be contacted to help undergraduates fill out t forms and write letters tor admission to graduate schools. j! The Center is also maintaining a file on the . ,:' research interests of each professor in the depart- i I ment, and independent study possibilities. This file will help channel students to the right professors, ;sji and relieve faculty of having to weed through students. a I E Local job opportunities in the field are also on I file in the Center. 1 . inli Mrs. Smith said that the goal of the Advisor) Center is to help undergraduates become more involved in the department. Plans are being made to contact incoming freshmen registering is psychology majors this fall. "If a student has a question he can't find m I answer to, we'll put the question on file, and dig 1 out the answer for him," Mrs. Smith said. U.I |
