Show "Running Redskins need more roadwork-USU wins 93-77 BY RICK SORENSEN Sports Editor In a lack-luster way Utah's "Runnin' Redskins" fell prey to a quick, sure-shooting Utah State team 94-77 in Logan Saturday night. The game began at an even pace with each team matching the other's points until Aggie center Lafayette Love sank three foul pitches and Marv Roberts added two with a lay-up setting Utah down 14-9. From that point on through the remainder of the first half the Utes lost their cool and the Aggies increased their lead to 50-38 at half-time. Beginning the second half Ken Gardner and Mike New- lin made a stab at recovering their lost ground but Utah State snuffed snuf-fed the Redskin attempt with a scoring barrage of their own which opened up a 17 point margin. mar-gin. Losing any assemblance of organization, the Redskins began throwing the ball up whenever dieir wasn't a hand in their face. Many of the shots were wild and Utah State recovered die rebounds re-bounds as Roberts, Nate Williams and Love appeared to be the only players stationed under the basket for a rebound. USU unquestionably un-questionably controlled the boards. Statistically the Utes were lopsided lop-sided as only two players reached the double column figures. Mike Newlin approached his average of last season of 26 points per game with 23 points and Ken Gardner continued his consistent scoring with 20 points. John Dearman had eight points and Peaches Las-ter Las-ter canned seven. Utah features a non-exsistent offensive pattern which relys on its scoring ability, depending upon the initiative of the individual to find an open spot for the shot and then making the shot. This is Jack Gardner's noted run and shoot style. Utah's problem appeared to be that when a player found an open spot for the shot he balked an passed the ball to someone else who more than likely had two or three defenders in the immediate area. Then this obviously covered individual would attempt a shot through the thick of it. It appeared ap-peared as if the Redskins were just throwing the ball up and hoping for the conversion. Unfortunately, Jack Gardner's "Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contenders" haven't looked like contenders and obviously ob-viously need the pre-season matches mat-ches to iron out their wrinkles. Although the Utes stayed with USC for most of the game and were not clearly out of it until the closing minutes, Utah State un questionably whipped which is aclimatized to dob whipping. 8t: Frosh Set Stage The Utah Freshman teanu me stage for their senior C0Un,:. parts as they lost a close dec '" to the Aggie freshman 85-80 ,i Saturday night.
