Show Most recent grade counts toward gpa, Council rules Students who repeat a class for any reason will be able to have the last grade received figured in their grade point average as a result of a recent Faculty Council ruling. Clarence Reder of the Registrar's Regis-trar's Office said that to have earlier grades removed, students need only contact his office. All grades received will remain cn transcripts but only the last one for any class will count in 'the GPA, even if earlier grades are higher. "This is a move in the right direction," said Mr. Reder, "the drawn after 30th day of class with a passing grade) and "I" (incomplete) (in-complete) are never figured in GPA. Grades of "X" (condition) and "I" may be made up within four quarters. A grade of "X" can never be replaced with one better than "C". After 44 credit hours, pass-fail pass-fail option can be used for non-major non-major classes. The College of Business has recently added plus and minus grades to their grading system for graduate students. Plus and minus are given on "C" grades throughout the University. transcript will tell how a student was performing at any given time and the GPA will better summarize summar-ize his present qualifications." He said that Brigham Young University Univer-sity uses a similar system and they were surprised that the University Uni-versity was changing to it because be-cause the recent trend has been towards counting all grades. Dr. Edward Eyring, chairman of the University Grading Practices Prac-tices Committee, said he doesn't feel that many students will be affected. "When a student fails in a class it is usually because he is passive or uninterested. Repeating Repeat-ing the class shouldn't make much difference, if he does decide to repeat it. In a grading survey conducted last year, 82 percent of the students stu-dents and 67 percent of the faculty fac-ulty responding favored such a move. The question posed by the study, however, specified that the highest grade would be recorded, not the last one. This ruling will probably have the greatest effect on students who are failing, not 'those who just receive low grades. The first quarter at the University, a GPA of 1.5 must be obtained or the stu-dnt stu-dnt must see the Scholastic Standards Stan-dards Committee. He will either be put cn probation or dismissed. His second quarter average cannot can-not be less than 1.75 and thereafter there-after must be 2.0. Grades of "W" (withdrawn by 30th day of class) "WP" (with- |
