Show Japanese, US students exchange thoughts BY II D ROBERSON Chronicle SlnK Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, 12 Japanese students met With six representatives of the studentbody for the purpose of learning sometliing. Hopefully, some sort of exchange benefitting both groups would take place. The Japanese students are chosen from a number of applicants (over 300, I gathered) for academic excellence, command of the English Eng-lish language and interest, by the Nagoya Broadcasting Company. Their expenses for a summertime educational trip to the United States are all paid by the company. As yet, no American company has been found that will do the same for a similar croup of students from the U.S. Now these guys are bright, informed and very curious about the United States in general. We were Jarmed out to them for brain draining following several days of scmlnar-type education in the states. A sort of intellectual dessert. A very short session three hours but intensive. These men are going to be leaders in their fields, may get a major portion of their impressions of the U.S. from tills visit. Be ready. How much do you know about your country? I am a political science major and an amateur journalist I knew something about the right tilings, enough to convey what I'd call good personal Impressions Impres-sions but it was a wringer. Bcaeuse I'm billed as sometliing of a radical, I got into some heavy raps. Origins of radicalism in Uie U.S.? Percentage of Maoists? Dewey's pragmatism and FDR? Indian reservations res-ervations and cultural shock? Economic imperialism, the military-industrial military-industrial complex and Indochina? Mililary service, laws and penalties? pen-alties? Comparative ideology, U.S. vs Japanese conservatism? The Grand Canyon? Presidential election compared to Parliamentary system? Western United States vs Eastern? Agricultural Productivity? Ainu's ain't Indians, are they? (no, but they're treated much the same) Beards, beads and long lieair? Mobility of population? Political activism and violence? (we decided student-Japan is more radical and violent because Japan has a more rigid governmental structure). Male chauvinism and the, Liberated Woman? (American women don't know proper respect) . It's good to know that there are people in other nations who at least are willing to evaluate our difficulties and strengtlis on an Intellectual In-tellectual basis. Restores the faith in reason. |
