Show Parking lots to be improved, expanded BY DAN IIEVMON Staff Writer Emmett Quinn, traffic engineer, and Arden Larson, landscape architect, announced plans Thursday Thurs-day which include the construction construc-tion of 453 parking stalls distributed distri-buted over the campus and the removal of 466 parking stalls south of the Business Lecture Building before spring quarter. New stalls will be constructed north of the Fieldhouse, west of the Fieldhouse and north of the Music Building, Mr. Quinn said. More Parking He estimated that another 385 parking stalls will be added during dur-ing spring quarter, including 80 east of the stadium and 305 in a new area east of the Bureau of Mines. The lot removed will facilitate the construction of the new south ; campus entrance which the Associated As-sociated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU) Executive Council Coun-cil urged be built Immediately, Mr. Quinn explained. However, upon construction of the new entrance, 146 more stalls will be added. Along with these stalls 145 will be added with the construction of the Fine Arts Complex, which will be completed no later than spring quarter of 1971, Mr. Larson said. Subtracting the number of stalls removed from the number of stalls . constructed, Mr. Quinn said a net tbtal of 663 stalls will be added at the end of construction. Although many people complain because of a lack of parking places, Mr. Quinn explained that "there's never been one day here when every parking lot has been filled." Parking Poll On Feb. 9 Mr. Quinn took a poll of the parking lots during the time enrollment indicates that the campus contains more cars than any other time. In this poll which he personally conducted and counted, he found that 1,147 student parking stalls where unoccupied. "They're there, but they're not where they're wanted," Mr. Quinn said. These were mainly distributed between the North Merrill lot, the gravel lot north of the Annex and the stadium lot. "No matter when you go there, what time, what day of the week," "you'll find some parking stalls there." |
