Show Student Affairs debates speaker incident Virginia P. Probes, dean of students, said Tuesday in the Student Stu-dent Affairs meeting that she would press charges against the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) for its "direct confrontation' confronta-tion' with her as a dean and for its ignoring of the Student Affairs regulations. Dean Frobes said in a Student Affairs meeting, "I interpreted the SDS's actions in a confrontation confronta-tion against me as a dean, as well as its disregarding of specific regulations re-gulations set up under Student Affairs." Monday, a group of students held a meeting in the Union foyer with Mrs. Elena Dillon, member of the Progressive Labor Party, a guest speaker from San Francisco Fran-cisco State College. The meeting violated a stipulation of the Student Stu-dent Affairs that states off-campus speakers addressing an open-invitation group must be cleared prior to the speaking engagement. According to Dean Frobes, "the rules and regulations of Student Affairs are fairly clear. Perhaps my inflexibility in stating that SDS could not bring this speaker on campus without prior clearance clear-ance encouraged the confrontation. confronta-tion. But it is critical that this committee be respected." Dr. William Whisner, member of the committee, asked Dean Frobes if Laury Hammel, representative repre-sentative for the SDS, was not acting in good faith in holding the meeting from a possible confusion over a February 1969 proposal by Student Affairs that off-campus speakers speaking only to students need not receive the approval of the committee. This ruling has not been approved by Institutional Council and is not in effect. The matter will be taken to the Judiciary for its consideration. Since Student Affairs is the appellate appel-late body for the Judiciary, the committee ruled that in this case, if an appeal is made, the Institutional Insti-tutional Council will be direct re-cepient. re-cepient. It is normally the next appellate body after the Student Affairs Committee. In other matters presented before be-fore the Tuesday meeting, the body passed the revised ASUU Constitution and sent it to Institutional Insti-tutional Council for review and possible debate of Issues involved. The American Conservative Party received initial recognition from the Student Affairs Committee. Commit-tee.
