Show Birch Society makes 'better world' ciety has undertaken to "slow down, stop and eventually rot the communist conspiracy," he said. To do this, Mr. Welch stated that they have used "the only fear of communism exposure." This is a new form of opposition that they have never met before, he explained, and "communists have been trying to destroy the John Birch Society ever since." John Birch Society "Maligning" In fact, Mr. Welch described "the maligning" that the John Birch Society has received as "more than any other organization organiza-tion in American history." And "the defamers generally don't try to refute anything we say. They don't refute the accu sation, they just destroy the accusers," ac-cusers," he said. The Society has "received unceasing un-ceasing harassment and distortion of actions" since it began, Mi'. Welch said. "And this is due to our success, not our mistakes." "Education is our only strategy, and truth is our only weapon," he emphasized. In his speech Mr. Welch outlined out-lined the differences between the John Birch Society and "the communist com-munist enemies" and challenged everyone to fight against this "immense criminal conspiracy." Unlimited Power Some of the differences include the fact that communists are seeking unlimited power and in contrast the Society seeks "no power over anybody. Absolute power corrupts absolutely," according ac-cording to Mr. Welch. Any means are used by communists com-munists to achieve their ends, whereas the Society stands that improper means are never just, he indicated. Another communist attitude is that "words conceal thoughts. Promises are made to be broken," he explained. The John Birch Society's So-ciety's conflicting belief is that "simple truth is one of morality." Other ideologies of communism contrasting with the Society's beliefs, be-liefs, according to Mr. Welch, include in-clude operation in secrecy and darkness, a plan to break down all morality and tradition and that man must learn to hate. "Only through spreading hate," he explained, "can communism succeed." suc-ceed." "The communist definition of peace is a situation where there is no opposition or resistance to communism," he said. "That isn't the kind of peace you or I believe in. Our gigantic task is that of creating understanding" under-standing" towards this threat and others that face the United States today, he said. Since its founding the Society set its major goals to "climb to higher levels of individual freedom free-dom and responsibility" and "to restore the faith in morality, spiritual spir-itual sense of values and enobling aspirations," he explained. Two Levels of Conflict "These purposes immediately brought us into conflict with communism com-munism on two levels," he said. The ideological level, and the actual plane of action are the two points, Mr. Welch indicated. Since then, the John Birch So- |
