Show Use it now, name it later Now that the Sports and Special Events Center has been finished and is in use, many people have been talking about naming it. For many, Sports and Special Events Center won't do. It has to be called something like the Wigwam. Others have pushed different names as their favorites. But regardless of the specific name, there is still a lot of talk about putting another name on the place. Perhaps the biggest reason for the concern over the building's build-ing's name comes from the fact that the students feel they should be the ones to name it. After all, it was built largely with student funds. But informed sources have indicated that students will not have any say in the naming of the building and this has caused some anxiety. Some students are especially especi-ally worried that the building will be named after the next person who donates a million dollars to the University. They don't approve of the University allowing people to build monuments for themselves. While it is true that the University Univer-sity is hard up for money, there should be other ways of encouraging people to donate money. Naming a building after someone should come after the money is donated and as a token of the University's thankfulness. It should not be used as an inducement to lure people into giving money. Besides, it would be better to see the building named after someone who has given service to the University or someone who pushed to have the building built. Regardless of what the outcome is there will probably be some feelings hurt. In order to keep the discontented number down to a minimum it would be best to get the students involved in the name selection. It would also be a good idea to wait a little while before naming the building. It will stand there for a long time to come, and waiting a few months in order to let emotions cool down would probably present a more rational solution to the problem. As it is right now, it's difficult to hear anyone clearly over the tumult of the crowd. |
