Show 1 Institutional Council names U treasurer - "-f L 11... I by Angelyn Nelson Staff Writer The Institutional Council approved ap-proved the appointment of George S. Eccles as University treasurer in its second meeting Monday. Mr. Eccles is former treasurer of the Board of Regents. Under the new Higher Education Act, a treasurer is not appointed for the Institutional Council but for the entire University. His duties will be the same basically as when he was Board of Regents treasurer, explained Ted Davis, vice president for financial fi-nancial affairs. The position is honorary; Mr. Eccles will offer periodic, financial advice but is lot a University employee. "We will draw from his financial finan-cial genius and advice whenever we can," said Vice President Davis. In other action, the Council received re-ceived the University's financial report for June. The University received $632,849.98 in gifts in June with $3,216,515.33 donated in the fiscal year-to-date. $2,469,-50 $2,469,-50 in grants and $2,876,807.21 "i contracts for a total of $5,-346,175.71. $5,-346,175.71. The Institutional Council re-Placed re-Placed the Board of Regents on Ju'y 1. Individual boards of regents re-gents for Utah's universities were abolished under the Higher Education Edu-cation Act passed by the 38th u'ah State Legislature. The act created a single, gov erning board for state institutions of higher education, while abolishing abolish-ing boards of regents and the Utah Coordinating Council for Higher Education. Each school has an eight-man institutional council directly over it. The council's power are limited limit-ed as it is subordinate to the single board. Presently, the council coun-cil is in its early stages, and its subcommittees will not be established estab-lished until after meetings with the State Board of Higher Education. Edu-cation. The council's officers are: Edward Ed-ward W. Clyde, chairman, and Joseph Bcrnolfo, vice chairman. Other councilmcn include: Calvin Rawlings, Mrs. Davis Watkiss, Linn C. Baker, Robert H. Hinckley, Hinck-ley, Fullmer H. Latter and Dr. Burtis Evans. Of the eight-member council, five are former regents. They are Mr. Bernolfo, Mr. Brinlon, Mr. Rawlings, Mr. Clyde, Mr. Hick-ley, Hick-ley, and Dr. Evans. Mr. Eccles is president and general gen-eral manager, member of the Executive Committee and director direc-tor of the First Security Corp. He is also president of the First Security Investment Co., and chairman of the Executive Committee Com-mittee of the First Security Bank of Idaho. He is a member of the Executive Committee of Aubrey G. Langston and Co. His business directorships include in-clude Utah Construction and Min- Georgc S. Eccles . . . newly appointed V. treasurer ing Co.; Union Pacific Railroad Co.; Husky Oil Co.; Farmers Insurance In-surance Group; American National Na-tional Insurance Co.; Amalgamated Amalgamat-ed Sugar Co.; Texas Gulf Sulphur Co.; American Bankers Life Insurance In-surance Co. of Florida; and American Amer-ican Bankers Life Assurance Co. of Florida. He is director of the National Industrial Conference Board and serves as Honorary Consul for Finland in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Wyo-ming. Recently, he was appointed metropolitan chairman of the National Na-tional Alliance of Businessmen by President Richard Nixon. He is also serving his third term as a member of the Government Borrowing Bor-rowing Committee of the American Ameri-can Bankers Association. |
