Show l -gj V - $ Spark, 1'zazz of 20's make Boyfriend9 hit T ! 'if " ' 7 4 J; x V'. -f ' Y po4 "v.. 17 i By Ed Ditterline Entertainment Editor The opening night performance of the Pioneer Memorial Theater mainstage production of the Broadway musical "The i Boyfried," written by Sandy ' Wilson and directed by H.E.D. Red ford was an unqualified success. i Aided by sparkly tunes and a j magnificent array of brightly colored sets, the actors and ! actresses gave the audience an evening of complete enjoyment. i Highlights of the evening were the performances of Dr. Keith Engar and Loa B. Lund as Lord ! and Lady Brockhurst and the I tremendous team work of Dana ; Swenson, Shirley Stringham, Julia Lee Cox and Sydney Brooks in their show-stopping antics, as the "proper" young ladies. i Madame Dubonnet, (Patricia Clawson), the head mistress at a French finishing school, tries to corral her young female protegees i into being young ladies when their ; attentions are sought by Marcel (Jeff Forward), Pierre (Howard ! Allen), Alphonse (Steve Parsons) i and Bobby Van Husen (Dan i Collins). The ensuing barrage of j slapstick hilarity ends in Madame Dubonnet "letting her own hair ! down" when she renews her old acquaintance with Percival Browne (Dr. H.E.D. Redford). The performances of Joan Carman as Polly Browne and Jack ' Paul Lewis as Tony Brockhurst were quite good, in particular the singing sequences where "I Could Be Happy With You" was featured. The costumes which were put , together by an entire crew were colorful, authentic, and thoroughly enjoyable as were the ' assemblage of sets, all of which were designed by Richard A. Lokken. The dancing was well executed 1 and the varying choreography by Susan Israel was exiciting to say the least. Pioneer Memorial has a thoroughly enjoyable hit which everyone should be sure to see. Players from the Pioneer Memorial Theater production of "The Boyfriend" playing through Jan. 25 at each evening 8 p.m. Center, Jeff Forward as Marcel; left to right Sydney Brooks (Nancy), Rena Dusenberry (Hortense), Julia Lee Cox (Fay) and Shirley Stringham as Dulcie.
