Show SPORTS Sports enthusiasts over the holidays kept busy watching the barrage of football bowl games, holiday basketball tournaments and ski racing that monopolized prime television time for most hours of the vacation. Other sports enthusiasts were testing out their slats at Utah's newest ski resort, Park City West. Reports came back that skiing was great at all areas and the runs at "Utah's Newest" were challenging and fun. Jack Gardner's "Runnin Redskins" tipped off the first annual Utah Classic at the Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse and finished second place to a strong Colorado State University team. Coach Gardner and the team members are looking forward to next year when the second edition of the Classic will be staged in the new 1 5,000 seat Special Events Center. The Utes started out slow but came on strong towards the end of the holidays with big wins over Connecticut, ; Virginia Military Institute and most recently over the University of Southern California. ..at California. ..and that was a surprise. Utah now sports an" amazing five and seven won-lost mark for its hardwood efforts this season. Utah's superstars, Louis (Speedy) Thomas, Gary Kerl and Norm McBride carried the name of Utah to two college all-star bowl games. Thomas and McBride were starters in the annual East-West Shrine football game in San Francisco. Speedy recovered an East fumble that set up the victory for the Western stars. F. B. Robbins, Utah tennis star, went down to defeat in a hard-fought tennis match in Miami, Florida. Robbins will be championing Utah's tennis team when practice gets under way this spring. All in all Utah's sports holidays proved to be interesting and exciting. 1 |
