Show Don't Hurry On Pearl Proof By DUANE CARD ALL Chronicle Staff Writer 3 People shouldn't hurry to prove f or disprove the actuality of the finding of the Pearl of Great Price ' Papyri, said Dr. Hugh W. Nibley, ;. professor of history and religion at Brigham Young University. ' Speaing at a symposium in the ; Union Ballroom Monday night, Dr. Nibley said, "The papyri have been . around for several thousand years. There is no need to rush into a ; translation of them just to be able to prove or disprove their truthfulness." Also speaking at the symposium sponsored by the American Society for the Middle East was the discoverer discov-erer of the documents, Dr. Aziz S. Atiya, University professor of history. his-tory. Dr. Atiya related the story of how he found the payri in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art while doing research for a book he was working on. Dr. Atiya said, "I have discovered discover-ed many things of importance during dur-ing my many years of doing research, re-search, but this is the crowning point of all my discoveries." "It is a great honor to do some thing for this community, a community com-munity that has done many things for the world," he said. Important Bole Dr. Nibley praised Dr. Atiya for the important role he played in the disvovery and acquiring of the documents doc-uments for the LDS Church. Dr. Nibley said fellow Egyptologists Egyptolo-gists have told him since the discovery dis-covery of the papyri that they have known about them since 1902 but just didn't say anything. "It took Dr. Atiya to discover them and get them for the church," said Dr. Nibley. |
