Show L. S. Skaggs Chosen Honorary Alumnus L. S. Skaggs, president of the Skaggs Drug Centers, Inc., the man largely responsible for the building of the new College of Pharmacy at the University, received an award as Honorary Alumnus of the University of Utah Thursday evening in the Union Building Ballroom as Homecoming festivities moved into high gear. Dr. Burtis R. Evans, president of the Alumni Association, made the award. Mr. Skaggs took over the management of Skaggs in 1950 when he was in his twenties. At that time the company consisted con-sisted of 11 stores. It now has been built up to 77 stores with further expansion anticipated. This record has earned him a reputation as one of the most outstanding, aggressive and successful suc-cessful chain drug store operators opera-tors in the intermountain area, nationally recognized for the phenomenal growth of his operation. Mr. Skaggs is the second Utahn to be so honored. The first award was made in 1965 to University President Emeritus A. Ray Olpin. Mr. Skaggs' civic and philanthropic philan-thropic interests are many. An alumnus of Westminster College Col-lege in Salt Lake City, he is vice president of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, a member of the Rotary Club and a 32nd Degree Mason. He serves on the Airport Council Coun-cil of Salt Lake. |
