Profs, students and money were the topics of KUED's "Query" Tuesday Tues-day night with University President Presi-dent James C. Fletcher. President Fletcher fielded questions from journalism students on Channel 7 concerning financial, faculty and student affairs. President Fletcher spent most of the evening reviewing financial questions of the University. "T h e crisis in higher education is the fact that costs are going up nationwide nation-wide and yet revenues are not going up," said President Fletcher. "There need to be more dollars per student." stu-dent." Budget Cut 4 Per Cent Discussing recent state legislation legisla-tion President Fletcher observed, "We have modified our programs and made suggestions to modify tax structures to have the state help support us. We have had problems prob-lems with whims of fortune. The State Legislature felt that we should not receive more money. In fact they cut our budget by 4 per cent. Asked how this money pinch would affect out-of-state tuition and athletics, President Fletcher pointed point-ed out, "It is hard for taxpayers to justify paying for some who comes from out of the state." He added that Colorado has an out-of-state tuition of $1100 a year. Athletics Department Hurt President Fletcher said the 4 per cent cut "hurt us in athletics". "As the athletic budget drops, we lose quality, as we lose quality, the gate drops." "Faculty inbreeding sometimes exists," said President Fletcher, "because we have not looked far enough outside of the state. We tend to take easiest solutions or go to neighboring institutions. The main thing is that we have to look for the best wherever they are." Orientation Spectacular "The Freshman Orientation program pro-gram is spectacular and the Course Evaluation program is going very well," he said. President Fletcher praised the ASUU activities and said that "the |
