Show State Offical Backs Freedom To Protest I -J ' i -i- 4 By BETHE WOLF Chronicle Feature Editor Secretary of State Clyde Miller Mil-ler commented ort the recent Bookstore demonstrations during an interview Thursday. Secretary Secre-tary Miller, who also serves on the University Board of Regents, declined to express any definite opinion over the Bookstore issue is-sue because he has not gone into the situation in detail as yet. HOWEVER, Miller did express the opinion that students have Secretary of State Miller . . . comments on Bookstore the right to protests when they are of a constructive nature. "Protests do a great deal of ', good because they bring to a head mis-understandings which can then be solved," he stated. Asked if the University Bookstore Book-store should be student owned and operated, Miller replied, "Perhaps there should be some serious thinking for a student-owned student-owned operation. A University Bookstore is for the benefit of the students and it should be operated op-erated to benefit them to the best of its abilities." MILLER stated that before any recommendations can be made, the Bookstore issue must be presented in detail to the Board of Regents. Although he is not certain if the demonstrations against the University Bookstore are justified. justi-fied. Miller emphasized that the students are within their rights to stage a protest as long as the demonstrations do not cause harm or are of a "destructive "de-structive nature." |
