Show Navy Image Projected In Union Thirty-six paintings of naval history will be shown Sunday at 4 p.m. in the fourth floor Union gallery in a Navy Art Exhibit, sponsored by the University's United States Navy R.O.T.C. THE PAINTINGS, covering a period betwen 1941 and 1964, are by eleven navy "combat artists," art-ists," nine of whom are still living liv-ing and three of whom are still on active duty. The artists, who painted on the actual combat sites, are commissioned com-missioned through the Navy Art Cooperation and Liaison Committee Com-mittee of the Salmagundi Club (NACAL) to "articulate the Navy image, express it so there be no misunderstanding, do it explosively explo-sively or when need be, gently, but say it with all the power of color and line," according to Paul B. Fay, Jr., Under Secretary of the Navy. Part of a collection of more than 3,000, some of which have been exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the paintings are worth as much as $25,000 apiece. According to Lt. Kollmeyer, of the local N.R.O.T.C., the artists art-ists paint a "Service man's picture pic-ture of life." Professional artists of the Salmagundi Club select the best pictures available to be added to the collection. The collection col-lection grows yearly. The sub-collection of 36 paintings paint-ings to be displayed here have been exhibited on many college campuses and will be at the University Uni-versity until Jan. 22. The Sunday opening will be covered by local television stations. Local naval cadets will serve as security guards and hosts for the showing. |
