THE FIRST game was played at Cincinnati, where the highly rated Bearcats remembered their defeat at the hands of the Redskins Red-skins just two years ago and were out for revenge. The Utes were never really in the game as Cincinnati steam rolled to an j impressive 84-66 lashing of the Utes. Jerry Chambers led the Utes in scoring with 23. At Raleigh, N.C. the Redskins were destined to lose their second sec-ond straight but in contrast to the Cincinnati game Utah was in this one all the way. Chambers who has carried the load all season, again, rose to the occasion oc-casion with 19 points with Rich Tate and George Fisher doing their share of the scoring. Final score was North Carolina 90, Utah 85. JEFF OCKEL and Jerry Chambers Cham-bers pulled down 22 rebounds between them and George Fisher nine as the Utes showed there potential with an 85-72 victory over North Carolina State's Wolfpack. Chambers led in scoring scor-ing by scorching the nets for 30 points. Miami's flashy little Junior Gee hit a jump shot with 10 seconds remaining in the final game to give Miami's Hurricanes a pulse pounding 88-87 victory. LEADING THE Utes in scoring scor-ing was the ever consistent Chambers as he gave the Miami sportswriters something to write about as he scored a season high of 31 points. Big George Fisher scored a fine 21 points from his reserve guard role. A balanced scoring attack by Miami was the telling story with Mike Wittman and Rusty Parker tallying 22, Rick Jones had 24 and Patrician balanced out the hurricane express. The Utes open the WAC season sea-son Friday and Saturday when Arizona and Arizona State take turns at trying to stop the pot- , ent Redskin offensive machine. , THE UTES will meet the Wildcats Wild-cats in the season debut Friday Fri-day at 8 p.m. in the Einar Nielsen Niel-sen Fieldhouse and ASU's Sun Devil's Saturday. The two Arizona Ari-zona Schools will compete with BYU on the alternate nights with their Redskin dates. Wyoming and New Mexico get their conference season underway under-way at Albuquerque Saturday at 8 p.m. Utah's Jeff Ockel gives the ball an extra nudge as it heads for the net. Ockel's foul shots gave Utah a one point lead over Miami with 30 seconds left, but Miami won 88-87. |
