Show Re-armament Leader To Speak Today Olympic Medal Winner To Air 'Youth Training' John Sayre, Olympic gold medal winner and leader in the World-wide organization of "Moral Re-Armament" will appear today in the Union Ballroom at noon. He is a representative of this organization from the world of athletics. SAYRE IS BEING sponsored by the ASUU Artist and Speakers Committee. He is presently on a tour of the Western States. John Sayre, rowed in the coxswainless four that won the Gold Medal at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960, the first American Ameri-can crew to win this event. HE HAS DEVOTED much of his life to this work, he has said concerning America and the Olympics "We must give everything every-thing we have to win. "Second is not good enough for America. "BUT IF WE take on responsibility for the life of our nation and the picture she presents to the world in the 1964 Olympics, we will restore to America not only her athletic greatness; but her greatness as a nation meant to set a pattern of sportsman- ship and nationhood the rest of the world will follow." A native of Tacoma, Wash., Sayre trained six years for his Olympic achievement, including four years at the University of Washington and two with the Lake Washington Rowing Club. HE WAS a member of crews which won a Pan-American Games Gold Medal in 1959 and defeated the Russians in Moscow in 1958. He was elected to the Helms Hall of Fame in 1960. AT THE 1964 Tokyo Games, Sayre, with his Olympic crew-mate crew-mate Richard "Rusty" Wailes, was asked by the U.S. Olympic Committee to give the American team training which would equip them to reserve the trend which has made U.S. athletes more renowned for bad behavior off the field than for their good performances on it. Three days after their arrival, the Tokyo press commented on the "new spirit" of the Americans. Ameri-cans. BECAUSE OF his work with the Japanese Athletic Assoc., Sayre was asked to assist in the establishing of a government-sponsored youth training program with two million members. mem-bers. Sayre was director of athletics at Moral Re-Armament's conference confer-ence for Tomorrow's America last year, where 2400 youths from all over 40 states were trained in moral and physical fitness. fit-ness. MORAL RE-ARMAMENTS aims are to end dictatorship and give birth to liberty for all men ... to end moral pacifism and give birth to a fighting spirit ... to end racial violence and give birth to a nation that speakers with a united voice. Moral Re-Armament says we can no longer live safe and free when we allow prehistoric emotions emo-tions of hate, fear and greed to divide us. WE NEED an explosion of the human heart created by men and women who realize that the modernization of man is our greatest task. The answer is a revolution to upturn the secularization of our times and build sound family life, teamwork in industry, unity in a nation committed to unite all conflicting elements on earth. THE WORLD need be neither red nor wrecked. It can be rebuilt. re-built. This rebirth of humanity is the destiny of our age. |
