Show Columbia Oath Coerces Frats i NEW YORK (CPS) All 16 social so-cial fraternity chapters at Columbia Co-lumbia University have complied with the school's requirements that they file a "Declaration of Non - Discriminatory Practices," although one house had to disaffiliate disaf-filiate from its national organization organiza-tion in order to do so. The local chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity found it necessary neces-sary to resign from the national nation-al fraternity. The resignation was accepted, effective Oct. 1, 1964, by Harry V. Wade, national na-tional president of Sigma Chi. The requirement was originally stated as a university policy in 1953, with the date for compliance compli-ance set as Oct. 1, 1960, and later extended to Oct. 1, 1964. THE UNIVERSITY said that after this date, "no fraternity, social organization, or other student stu-dent group shall be permitted to function on the university campus cam-pus if it is compelled by its constitution, con-stitution, rituals, or government to deny membership to any person per-son because of his race, creed, color, or national origin." The prohibition would not apply ap-ply to "a student group that is organized in good faith for devotional devo-tional purposes or for the study or propagation of a religious faith." THE UNIVERSITY also required re-quired that alumni organizations fepsonsible for the local chapters, chap-ters, and the national organizations organiza-tions of the fraternities, join the "Declaration of Non-Discriminatory Practices." |
