'; IF YOU'RE an average sports enthusiast, you've proba b 1 y heard or seen little of the game even though it's one of the very few original American sports. LaCrosse, first played in American Ameri-can Indian villages was picked up by the early French explorers who saw the game adopted it and revised the rules. At present in the United 'States there are 150 universities with NCAA - recognized LaCrosse teams. The University team belongs be-longs to the Western College LaCrosse Association and competes com-petes against teams from Arizona, Ari-zona, Stanford, Claremont, Colorado Colo-rado and the Air Force Academy. The University of 'New Mexico is now in the process of organizing organ-izing a team. LACROSSE is a combination soccer and hockey. It is played on a field approximately the size of a football field and there is at each end a goal similar to an enlarged hockey goal. Each team is made up of ten men. Each man carries a stick with a net on the end, called a Crosse. Three of the men play strictly offensive positions and must stay on the half of the field which their goal is on. Another group of three men play defensive positions only, and they must stay on the half o fthe field which the other team's goal is on. The last group of three can play either offensive offen-sive or defensive positions on any part of the field. The tenth man acts as a goalie. The two stationary teams of three each are called midfield teams. THE PENALTIES are time penalties similar to those in hockey and depend on the seriousness ser-iousness of the violation. A LaCrosse La-Crosse game lasts for four fifteen fif-teen minute periods. Each goal counts one point. On April 10 and 11, the Redskin Red-skin team traveled to Arizona only to be defeated by the University Uni-versity of Arizona squad, 15-2, and the Phoenix LaCrosse Club, 5-3. It was the first outing of the season for the young Utes. ON MAY 1 and 2, the University Uni-versity will play host to a Western West-ern College LaCrosse Association Associat-ion tournament at the Ute Stadium. Sta-dium. Games will be played Friday Fri-day and Saturday at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased pur-chased from team members. On May 16, the Utes will travel to Colorado to play the University of Denver and the Air Force. |
