Number 116 yI HJoKlo Dram' Fop oun ta State Congressman To Ask For Complete Investigation A member of the Utah House of Representatives said Monday T 'tt8"2 t0 introduce a resolution before the next session of the Utah legislature asking for an "investigation of those responsible re-sponsible for the high school Model United Nations program held annually on the University campus. J. McKinnon Smith, who represents Salt Lake dry (District (Dis-trict 8), told the Chronicle that in view of facts presented to him, and conclusions that he had drawn from a forum on campus earlier In the day, the investigation is necessary. He said: "The Model UN is student oriented to create in student stu-dent s minds a greater love for the United Nations than for the United States of America, and the deliberate down-grading of the flag and U.S. institutions. I do not feel that the University, which is dependent upon state funds for its operation, should allow the above to go on without a fair presentation of the other side of the issue." "UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES," he said, "and the deliberate delibe-rate effort to withhold the American point of view, I will introduce intro-duce in the next legislature a resolution for an investigation of those responsible for this un-American and unpatriotic program." Mr. Smith's comments followed follow-ed a speech Monday afternoon in the Union Little Theater by Dr. Richard Gibby, former University Uni-versity engineering professor, who told attending University students, "The Model UN is not giving to the high school students stu-dents a fair, balanced, competent picture of world problems." "Rather,' he said, "it is serving ser-ving as a kind of advanced offensive campaign against the traditional foundations of our country." Dr. Gibby spoke on the topic of "The Model UN and Academic Freedom," and expressed a deep concern over what he termed its "lack of objectivity and academic acade-mic freedom." "ONE THING that tends to remove re-move the objectivity from the program is the fact that the Model UN is a highly structured struc-tured organization with a captive cap-tive audience," said Dr. Gibby. "Students," he continued, "are emotionally involved in the activity. acti-vity. It is a kind of game to them. While they may engage in debate over a variety of problems prob-lems within the context of the UN and give the appearance of objectivity, the larger problem nf whathar tVio T TM ifcAlf ic n legitimate subject for debate can never be considered. "The UN is not a sacrosanct organization beyond criticism, although it is treated as such." Dr. Gibby had been invited to speak at the Model UN, but said he was "never told of the times which I could speak, making my appearance at the program impossible." im-possible." Another major issue of discussion dis-cussion was the misplacement of the American flag during the past two years in the Model UN. |
