Margo, after sacrificing a year of school, is registered for j spring quarter at the University. I The "dream year" as it may seem for many people was, in- J deed, hectic according to Miss Waiters, and she is relieved that it is over, though the honor of representing the United States will always be remembered. THE ACCOUNT of her attempt at-tempt to be selected for the O-lymplc O-lymplc ski team began winter before last. All during that skiing ski-ing season, Margo had to compete com-pete in every major race held in the country, placing high in each one to even be considered for a slot on the team. The U.S. divided into seven skiing regions with each sponsoring spon-soring at least one race. The region re-gion in this area is called the Intermountain Ski Association and the race they sponsor is the Harriman Cup held at Sun Valley. Val-ley. In June of 1963, the team representing the United States wm announced. The team was composed of ilx glrl and eight men and head coach was University of Colorado ki coach Bob Beattle. Immediately, coach Beattie sent orders to the team members. mem-bers. Word to the men and women wom-en was the same at least 20 minutes of calisthenics each day, a 5-6 mile bike ride each day, four mountain climbing hikes each week. Each was encouraged to play as many active sports as possible to get in top physical shape. This demand extended until the middle of August. FOR THE next three months, the team worked together training train-ing to give each member a look at all phases of Olympic competition. com-petition. Shortly after Thanksgiving, the team and coaches left the U.S. for Val DTsere, France, where they underwent more extensive ex-tensive training. For the month preceding the start of the Olympics, the men and women factions of the team spilt up to compete In various races across Europe. Due to a misfortune in these preliminary races, Margo sprained sprain-ed her ankle so badly she wasn't expected to participate in the Olympics at all. JANUARY 9 opened the ninth Winter Olympics. The day of reckoning had come. As everyone knows, the skiing portion of the U.S. team won four of the six medals awarded to the United States. MARGO WALTERS . . . U.S. Olympic skier MARGO specifically commented comment-ed on the outstanding coaching done by coach Beattie and his staff. The U.S. ski team this year has been the most representative repre-sentative one that has ever been entered. The transition from nothing no-thing tp something illustrates hard work and determination for constant improvement. Margo Walters, a local girl with talent, is a remarkable person. per-son. She has done something that only one other woman from Utah has done she has been selected for a U.S Winter Olympic Olym-pic team. Salt Lake and Utah should be proud. Margo should be congratulated and praised for her fine accomplishments. |
