Show " Gripes On Campus Government Who Is Responsible? We've about had it listening to gripes over student stu-dent government, "mickey mouse-ness" of student elections, and the "shallowness" of ASUU candidates and their issues. . , We've about had it because we find a very dei-l dei-l inite relationship between those who seem to do most ot the griping and those who haven't taken five min-I min-I utes ot their cynical time to even make a casual at-j at-j tempt at understanding the nature and functions ot our student government, the services which it can and ! does provide, the background of the candidates, their ! plans or any of the issues which the hopefuls are : discussing. . , Next year is going to be a particulary touchy j one for students. Dr. James Fletcher, for example, is going to want to establish a good report between new administration and students. It seems to us that the new studentbody officers ought to have a pretty good idea of what's going on in their constituency and ought to possess a great degree of articulateness in presenting that case when the occasion arises. Students who don't think key studentbody officers off-icers can be powerful ought to take a look at the budget which the ASUU treasurer deals with annually. It's over $200,000 and that treasurer can wield enough influence to cut off a lot of athletic department water. The personnel coordinator's responsibility is just that, and it is this very influential position which to a very large extent determines the smoothness and effectivness of the many ASUU committees. Thus i a weak ASUU personnel coordinator can cost stu-dents stu-dents a great deal in terms of the usefulness of the goods and services which our student government attempts to provide. On this page are, however sketchy ,the programs, backgrounds, and issues as the ASUU prospectives see them. The letters should be analyzed, the candi- dates put on the line at every opportunity, presenta- : tions and forums attended in these last two days of j ASUU elections. A special appeal is made to students to attend ; the Chronicle-sponsored debate, today at noon, between be-tween ASUU presidential candidates Price and Cannon. Can-non. The hopefuls will square off on issues like athletics, class funds, art controversies, and role which student government does or oughlJto. piay ;in: .student's .stu-dent's University life. I The final step is obvious: vote. The height of hyprocrisy is the student who moans and gripes about student government's alleged ineffectiveness, ineffective-ness, then passes up the ballot box. In the last analysis, the Chronicle will feel a lot better- about printing complaints concerning "irres-! "irres-! ponsible and ineffective" student government when it feels students have not been ineffective in carrying carry-ing out their responsibilities. |
