Sports Editor Any hopes of a post season tournament tour-nament berth, seemed to fade away early Saturday night as Utah missed its first nine field goal attempts to fall behind Arizona State never to come back. THE SUN Devils, now number one in the WAC, routed the powerless power-less Utes, 103-78, after the Redskins Red-skins had stopped Arizona, 86-73 on Friday. The Utes had one of their best nights from the field Friday in tanking 52.4 percent against the Wildcats. Spence Thurgood who hit nine of 12 from the field led the Utes with 19 points, 13 of which came in the first half and kept the Utes ahead by four. The lead was lengthened to seven, 41-34 at intermission. . .. . DENNIS COUCH played one of his finer games as he thrilled the 4,989 Ute partisans with a tremendous tremen-dous display of passing and shooting. shoot-ing. The senior center tanked 10 points in the first half. . Arizona's 6-5 forward, sensation Albert Johnson fouled out with 8:38 remaining. Utah wasted little time in jumping the lead to a 10 point margin that never dropped and finally climbed to an 86-73 climax. Fisher hit 15, nine in the second sec-ond half, Moon 13, Lash 12, Couch 12, Danny Hawes nine and Skip Kroeger seven. SATURDAY NIGHT the outlook changed completely. After controlling control-ling the opening tip, Utah missed nine consecutive shots from the field and fell behind 12-2 in the first four minutes of play. Thurgood, Thur-good, Fisher : and Moon finally broke the ice for Utah but Arizona State already had the margin and the Skins never could catch up. It took the Utes less than five minutes to narrow the score to one, but foul trouble pulled Moon out. ASU slipped away again to an 11 point lead at the half, 49-38. The Devils ran for eight points in' the last minute and a half to run up the biggest loss the Utes have suffered this season and the first in Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse since ASU did the trick 18 games ago. The 103-78 final also marked the first time this year any team has hit over the century mark against the red. Doug Moon, in his final game in the Ute Fieldhouse, hit nine of 15 goals and three of three from the charity stripe for 21 points to lead the floor. Spence Thurgood's final Utah appearance netted the former Granite High star nine. Dennis Couch and Danny Hawes tanked four and seven respectively. Sophomore George Fisher held some hope for next year with 16, junior Skip Kroeger hit 11, Keith Allred hit six (late in the game), Granny Lash two, Currington two and Stepan did not score on one attempt. Utah has been smaller than every opponent this year, but Saturday was fight night it really showed up. The Devils picked off 54 rebounds while the Utes were held to 38. Art Becker and Joe Caldwell accounted for 57 points and 26 takedowns between them. The Ute freshmen met a fine Casper J.C. five and were defeated de-feated 82-73 Friday. |
