On the maps of the world i you'll f;nd it not; j 'Twas fought by the mothers : of men." 'Twas near the sixth hour of ! Christ's agony upon the Cross I of Calvary "that he paid tribute! to his mother, who stood in the shadow of the cross beside the disciple John: "Woman, behold thy son." And then to the dis-, ciple, "Behold thy mother." ! The last thought, almost the last word, was with his mother. ! George Washington said, "I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and phy-! sical education which I have re-j ceived from my mother." Remember Abraham Lin-1 coin's words, "All that I am or i hope to be I owe to my angel i mother." It was Thomas Edison who said, "My mother was the making mak-ing of me. She was so true, so sure of me that I felt I had someone to live for, some one I must not disappoint." It was in the year 1 9 1 4 that President Woodrow Wilson asked that the American Flag be put on every government building on the second Sunday in May of each year, thus set- May we then at this time say to maidens in theiT teens that the happiness of your future In mes and the glory that may one day be yours as a mother depends upon the strength of iliaracter you possess during your courtship days; cleanliness, cleanli-ness, virtue and high ideals are principles that you may build upon with confidence and trust; oher principles that may be more popular or thrilling may lead to sorrow and misery. Many of us can go to our mothers and put our arms around them and say "I love you,1' and how nice this would be for all of us to do. However, there are those who have said goodbye to their mothers and have only memories and her influence in-fluence that lives on and on. All will someday have to say goodbye to mother and be left the memories of kindness and love we have shown her. How much nicer it will be to be left these kind of memories than memories of n e g le c t and thoughtlessness that we may inadvertently in-advertently manifest toward our mothers. The fewer of these memories we have the happier we will be. "The noblest thoughts my soul can claim, The holiest words my tongue can frame. Unworthy are -to praise the name More precious than all other. An infant, when her love first came, A man, I find it just , the same; Reverently, I breathe her name, The blessed name of Mother." |
