Show SOUTH MILFORD FARMING AREA HAS FAVORABLE SOIL FOR ROW CROPS By Gayle Tolley j Agricultural achievements of last year's growing j season in the Milford Aralley were very high , according to II. L. Tolley, South Milford farmer. The average E k ' alfalfa seed production was 450 pounds per acre for approximately 1100 acres of alfalfa allowed to go to seed. This seed ' averaged 40c per pound, thrasher run. The alfalfa hay and other legumes j brought an average yardage of 5 tons ! of hay per acre from about 1200 acres, i Those farmers raising potatoes had the ' high yield of 300 sacks per acre for ap- i Gayle proximately 800 acres. I Possibilities are unlimited for row crops ! such as carrots, celery and the like, Mr. Tolley said. The ' soil and weather conditions are well suited. If these crops should be developed, warehouses and suitable locations for marketing and handling the produce would have to be locat-1 ed and constructed. California i has excellent markets for the goods produced here and Milford is well equipped with transportation transpor-tation to these and other markets mar-kets which may develop. There have been row crops in the valley in past years, which included sugar beets, potatoes, and celery. Success is antici- i pated with a considerable acre- j age of beans to be planted this spring. Most all types of garden j crops would prove sucessful if planted into row crops. One obstacle In the way of successful row cropping is the lack of labor. This would be solved if there were row crops i because labor camps would be : set up with laborers from the Coast or from over the Mexican ' I border. j According to the state engi-1 ' neer, deep wells are feasible. Several deep wells are to be dug this year by permits issued in the past. No drilling permits 1 are being issued until a definite water level can be determined by the various tests being made. The Milford Valley has approximately approxi-mately 5,000 acres of land under cultivation at the present time, and with the drilling of these new deep wells much more of the now useless land will be utilized for agricultural purposes. pur-poses. - |
