Show I Former teacher gets degree at U of U rites ument Park Second Ward in Salt Lake City. Edward L. Neff is confined at the Veteran's Hospital in Salt Lake City recovering from a recent illness. Reports indicate indi-cate he is doing: well. Freedom is a gift from the past but it is not at all certain that it will be a legacy to the future. There are times when the price to be paid for making: money mo-ney is not worth it. Dr. Hales attended a national nation-al board meeting at Miami Beach, Florida, recently. He was accompanied by Mrs. Hales and they flew to Jamacia where they vacationed before returning return-ing home. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Eu- Russell G. Hales, a former Springville resident, was awarded award-ed the doctor of philosophy degree de-gree in educational administration administra-tion at the August 18 commencement com-mencement of University of Utah. Dr. Hales is presently administrator admin-istrator of classes of the Division Divi-sion of Continuing Education at the university. He is currently a member of the board of directors, National Nation-al University, Extension Association, Assoc-iation, Division of Evening Colleges Col-leges and Class Extension. His affiliation with state and national na-tional educational societies include in-clude membership in the State of Utah committee on composite compo-site two-year post high school educational programs, affiliation affilia-tion with the Utah Academy of Arts and Sciences, Adult Education Association of Utah, Adult Education Association of the United States, National Society for the Study of Education, Edu-cation, National Organization on Legal Problems of Education, Educa-tion, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Phi, and Delta Phi. His thesis was "Decisions of the Appellate Court and Attorneys At-torneys General Opinions in the State of Utah Concerned with School Law." gene A. Hales of Spanish Fork, Dr. Hales received his early schooling in Springville and graduated from the Springville High School in 1944, where he was active in athletics, music and drama. He enlisted in the armed services and was accepted accept-ed into the V-12 program on special assignment. After completing com-pleting his basic training at Jacksonville, Florida, he was transferred to Memphis, Tennessee, Ten-nessee, where he served as a radar instructor. For three years he served an LDS mission in Czechoslovakia. Czechoslo-vakia. He and three other missionaries mis-sionaries were the first admitted admit-ted to Czechoslovakia after the invasion following World War II. Dr. Hales married the former Carma Jane Mendenhall of this city and attended BYU from where he received his BA degree. de-gree. He taught school in this city for several years prior to moving to Las Vegas where he was employed. He later returned return-ed to Salt Lake City to enter University of Utah to continue his education. Joining in congratulating him on his latest accomplishment are his six children.
