Show Defensive backs look good at Y Chris Apostol, who is coaching coach-ing the defensive backs at the Y this year, voices optimism when he says: "We should be as good perhaps a shade better by the time the season sea-son starts as we were last year. We lack experience, but the potential is there and we are working at it." With only a little over a week before the Cougars open conference play with New Mexico Mex-ico in Provo on Sept. 23, the defensive unit looks firm. Co-captain Co-captain Bobby Roberts, an all-WAC all-WAC man of last year, will be at one halfback spot. Backing up Roberts will be a new soph, Paul Sutorius who should be one of the top players on the squad this year, and for right halfback there are two letter-men letter-men vying for the spot, Bob Bean, 180 pound junior and Hank Mercado. Anchoring the safety position for the third season is senior Terry Colson of Georgia. Tom Pollard and Jack Sanders are both junior transfers who will be operating operat-ing behind Colson. Tom Lahmann, 195 pound all-around athlete from Carson, Washington, will be the starter star-ter at the monster spot. Joe James, another junior, will be behind Lahmann. Art Thomas, a 215 transfer from Taft College Col-lege may fill in and be used as a linebacker. A sophomore, Larry Echohawk, also figures in the defensive backfield. He will play both the halfback and safety position. |
