Show Utah spends more per capita on education than any other state Utah ranks number one among the fifty states in the proportion of personal income being spent for public education, educa-tion, according to a study just completed by Utah Foundation, the private governmental research re-search agency. The Foundation report shows that Utah spent $217.2 million for public education last year. This sum was equal to 9.8 of the total personal income received by all individuals in the state. For the nation as a whole, total state and local expenditures ex-penditures for public education were equal to $29 billion, or 5.9 percent of personal income, last year. According to the study, a total of $151.7 million was spent for local schools (elementary (elemen-tary and secondary) in Utah during the 1964-64 school year. Total expenditures for public higher education amounted to $59.9 million, and other public pub-lic education, principally vocational voca-tional schools, accounted for $5.6 million. Of the $217.2 mil- lion expended for public education educa-tion in Utah last year, approximately approx-imately $47.2 million was for capital outlay and $170.0 million mil-lion was for operating purposes. purpos-es. Big effort Foundation analysts point out that an important factor accounting for the unusually high percentage of personal income in-come spent for education in Utah is that the state has an abnormally high proportion of its population enrolled in the public schools and colleges. Utah ranks at or near the top among the fifty states both in the proportion enrolled in elementary ele-mentary and secondary schools as well as the percentage in college . As a result, even though Utah makes a greater effort to support education than does any other state, the amount expended per student is below the national average. In addition to ranking number num-ber one in the proportion of ' personal income going for public pub-lic education, the study notes that Utah also ranks second in i the percentage of its total I state and local government |
