Show Caring for deer is important With the 1966 deer season fast approaching, the Utah Department De-partment of Fish and Game today urged all hunters to care for their game properly in the field if they expect good meat when they arrive home Department spokesmen noted that game meat is often ruined by improper field care. The closer hunters can come to packing house methods, the better bet-ter their game will taste on the dinner table. Failure to cool game properly before transporting, hauling it in places where it can't cool, and failure to clean game are three of the major causes of "gamey flavored" meat. The following procedure is recommended for caring for deer in the field. 1. The animal should be cleaned and dressed immediately immediate-ly after the kill is made. 2. All blood and hair should be washed from the animal before be-fore transporting it home. Water Wa-ter won't hurt the meat if allowed al-lowed to drain off. 3. Meat should be cooled before be-fore being transported home. The animal should be placed or hung in such a manner that air can circulate freely around it. |
