Probably our children pay more attention to it than most of us adults, because the voyage that led to the discovery of the New World is fresher to them. Ours is an age of new discoveries. discov-eries. This is the decade when the first man will set foot on the moon. The stars are no longer out of reach. We have new heroes, he-roes, like Col. John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth. There will be others . . . other discoveries, other heroes. In such an age, we lose sight of the vision and bravery that made Columbus' voyage possible. It's so easy now to cross an ocean. But in its time and place, that trip across uncharted seas was one of man's greatest achievements. ach-ievements. And it established the pattern of the American spirit ... a pattern of courage, faith, and the willingness to challenge the unknown.
