Show Farm Bureau meetingset SALT LAKE CITY -The Utah Farm Bureau Board of Directors, meeting in Salt Lake City, believe the plight of Utah's farmers and ranchers can be improved im-proved "if fundamental changes in government philosophy implemented by the Administration are continued." The farmers and ranchers who direct the state's largest farm organization described current farm income as the worst since the Great Depression, placing the blame on "a generation of unwise and ill-advised political polcies which resulted in unreasonably high interest rates, unrealistically low commodity prices and a general national recession." They issued tour recommendations which the Farm Bureau believes can help improve im-prove the economic bind in which the state's agricultural community finds itself. The group said uncontrolled un-controlled federal spending must continue to be reduced in order to make credit more available and to reduce federal deficits. They appealed to lending institutions in-stitutions to help relieve current farm credit and refinancing problems. Development of new foreign and domestic markets for U.S. farm products and increasing consumption of those products are essential to boost prices ...and , eliminate-, price;,- , depressing surpluses, the farmers said. Farm Bureau supports the temporary use of export subsidies to counteract foreign governments' subsidies and trade restrictions which have hurt U.S. farm exports. The group alsourged all citizens, especially government leaders, to recognize that agriculture is the nation's most basic industry upon which all others are built. |
