The occasion was the Cedar City BMX Doubles Race, and the riders came in all sizes and shapes. The racers, who usually race in clear sunny weather, found the going a little bit more challenging Saturday. Besides the bitter cold temperature they were also faced with a stinging wind that blew riders, as well as dust across the course. One of the featured riders was 17-year-old Mike Poulson from Layton. Poulson is one of a six-member team representing the Schwinn bicycle company that travels all over the .United States. Before suffering a broken leg Poulson was one of the highest ranked riders in the nation and came to Cedar City to compete and work his way back up to the top. The races were sponsored by the Cedar City Kiwanis Club and the Cedar City BMX Parents Association. Trophies were awarded to over 100 riders, with a good share of them going to kids in the local area. Richard Barlow, president of the Cedar City BMX Parents Association had praise for the local racers. "Cedar kids did very well. They don't have as much competition . so we've been holding races of our own to get them more competitive," he said. The kids had numerous ups and downs on the course, and several kids were airborne as they flew from their mounts. Suprisingly all the kids suffered were a couple of bruises and hurt pride. The next BMX races will be conducted this Saturday with the action , expected to be just as fast and furious.. |
