Show IdofotroaL MX very likely; time to prepare One impression that it seems like everybody involved, including in-cluding us at The Iron County Record, left Washington, D.C., with - last week is that the MX missile system is going to be deployed in the area and that a secondary base will be constructed in the county. With that in mind, we say that it is now time to prepare. It is now time to quit fighting and make the best of what may or may not be a bad situation. We, like many others, don't want to see the lifestyle of the area change drastically. We like things, generally, as they are. But we aren't afraid of change, and if MX is coming, we may as well make the best of that change. Of course acceptance and preparation does not need to include lying down and letting the Air Force do whatever it wants to the area. In fact, we need to insist more feryently than ever that impacts be mitigated, that the good qualities of life in the area be changed as little as possible, that ranchers in the valleys of Utah and Nevada be allowed to carry on their operations to the greatest extent possible. However, we can't hide and we can't fight forever. We must accept the good things that can come from increased growth to the area, whatever this may be. Therefore, we put out the challenge to everyone in the public eye, including ourselves, to dig in our heels and try to maintain and, perhaps, enhance our way of life. The challenge especially goes out to the Iron County Commission, Com-mission, the Cedar City Council, the Parowan City Council, the Enoch Town Board and all other decision-making and planning entities in the county. Their input can do some good, if voiced loud enough and fervently fer-vently enough. We also challenge the Cedar City and Parowan chambers of commerce. Business could drastically change for good or for bad because of MX deployment. Part of that decision is theirs. We challenge the Four-County MX P61icy Board. Millions of dollars will flow through its office during the next few years. It is time now that a few less studies be done and a few more schools, sewer systems and roads be built. Mainly, however, we challenge the citizens of the county. All of those above are elected or appointed by you. Let them know what you want. Let them know that Iron County is a great place to live and you want it to stay that way, with or without MX. |
