Show REPORT SHOWS 6A0 REPORT INADEQUATE Congressman Dan Marriott Mar-riott said that a report on the. MX by the General Accounting. Ac-counting. Office reaffirms his contention that the Air Force has not adequately answered answer-ed a number of questions with regard to the deployment deploy-ment of the MX missile system sys-tem in Utah and Nevada. He expressed certain reservations res-ervations after an initial look at the report. He said he is concerned in particular by the fact that the cost of the system has escalated from $34 billion as estimated by the Air Force In 1979 dollars, dol-lars, to $70 billion when it is built. He also expressed express-ed upset that the fact that the Air Forces delay in its own EE may have made it impossible to meet the July 1986 Initial deployment date or the 1990 full operational deployment dates previously previous-ly set. 'The price tag and the time elemented now involved involv-ed in this program raise some doubts as to the wisdom wis-dom of pursuing it on the same basis that we have in the past. I am extremely concerned at the GAO recommendation rec-ommendation that In order to meet those dates special action such as legislation to expedite the land with-drawl with-drawl process may become necessary. I will not be a party to any fast track legislation leg-islation that bypasses the state's right and environmental environ-mental considerations or which fails to adequately answer the questions I've raised all along. This report touches on but does not answer questions ques-tions regarding the availability avail-ability of electrical power, pow-er, water, cement, and other resources in Utah -Nevada area. I will not be deterred deter-red from pursuing the subject of compatibility of the roles that Utah must play In mineral and energy development with the deployment deploy-ment of the MX system in our state.' If the missiles are ultimately ulti-mately to be sited in Utah we must also have an operating oper-ating base here with its accompanying ac-companying positive economic eco-nomic benefits.' The report calls on the Secretary of Defense to Inform In-form the Congress of how the Air Force will enforce measures to Insure the prts -ervation of location uncertainty uncer-tainty (preventing a potential poten-tial adversary from know. Ing where the missile U located within a clutter). |
