Both Milford and Minersville Miners-ville departments responded to the first call about 9:30 a.m. Thinking they had it extinguished they were called back about 1:30 p.m. after the wind had wihpped up a spark. Most of the roof and superstructure were damaged beyond repair, as the fire raced through the attic, and water damaged the rest. cause was already extinguished, exting-uished, but they checked it out before returning to town. Lillian Leko reported she had turned on the broiler when the fire broke out, but was not cooking. She extinguished ex-tinguished the blaze before calling the local department. Local residents were shocked Sunday evening when a fire of undetermined origin ori-gin destroyed the Merry-weather Merry-weather Cabin, up Ranch Canyon. The cabin, since 1957, had been the scene of many gatherings of friends, and organizations, and enjoyed en-joyed at one time or another by most everybody. A.B. 'Bert' Merryweath-er, Merryweath-er, said three young people reported the roof was ablaze between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Sunday. They immediately returned to town and told Merryweather about 6 p.m. He arrived on the scene at . 7 p.m. and the roof was gone, and all the walls were ablaze. The fire department depart-ment was not called. Merryweather said that a group of about eleven young people had entered the cabin cab-in Saturday, and at least three of them had spent the night, reportedly leaving about 2 p.m. on Sunday. When the fire was discovered dis-covered by three other young men about 4 p.m., the fire was well underway and coming com-ing through the roof. Merryweather said the flames totally engulfed the cabin immediately, and didn't seem to have started ' In one area and spread. Be -cause of this, Arson is being investigated. Merryweather plans to file trespass charges against each of the group who used the cabin Saturday night. The cabin was one of the first ones built up Ranch Canyon In 1957. They start- ed with one room and later added a bedroom and then a kitchen. The Sly cabin was later built on the same property, prop-erty, just a few yards away. Used mainly by family and friends, the Merryweathers were generous to groups and organizations. It was base camp for the hunting season and a hideaway for anybody looking for solitude. They loved It for honeymoons, honey-moons, and for students writing their master's thesis. the-sis. Friends were always welcome, and you only needed need-ed to ask. The Milford and Mlnersv-ville Mlnersv-ville Fire Departments were called to the Reed Carter farm last Wednesday to extinguish ex-tinguish a blaze in an unoccupied un-occupied home. The furnace had been left on to keep the water from freezing. The fire was discovered by Doris Barton, about 9:30 a.m. Thinking they had the fire out, both departments returned re-turned to town. But about 1:30 p.m. the Milford Fire Department was called again. The wind had evi- dently fanned a spark, which spread the fire from the furnace fur-nace room, through the attic. at-tic. Both Milford's trucks responded res-ponded and fought the blaze for nearly two hours before bringing the stubborn fire under control. The house suffered tremendous damage dam-age from both fire and water, wat-er, and is almost a total loss. Only the block outside out-side walls are undamaged.
