Show editorials Bureaucrats Win Politicians and bureaucrats came head to head this past week and the politicians lost. And with their loss, went a little bit more of . the self governing process, which free Americans are so prod of, but have less and less of , as the bureaucratic society tightens Its stranglehold. The loss, of course, was to BLM reorganization, reor-ganization, which was opposed by nearly eve -eybody In Utah, Including all politicians, local, lo-cal, state and federal, every one of the 29 county commissions, and all affected cities, and areas of the state. Just last week Hathaway told Sen. Garn that he was In sympathy with Utah and would do what he could to help then before those words could make print he approved the bureaucratic bur-eaucratic change. It'seven more significant how the bureaucrats (BLM in this instance) mane auve red one against another to get their way. This especially true in Price, Moab and Monticello. They first proposed to take the district office from Monticello to Price. Of course Monticello and Moab protested, and Price not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, didn't United, Moab and Monticello put a Sod fight. Undoubtedly the best united effort ef-fort In Utah. But the bureaucrats were more than capable of handling the situation. They simply moved the district office to Moab, relocating re-locating the present district offices in Price and Monticello; Uprooting hundreds of employees, em-ployees, and disrupting the lives of their families. What's more, the move will cost thousands, maybe millions of dollars In new building, while buildings in Price, Moab and Monticello Mont-icello were more than adequate for BLM to continue as it was and is operating, for many years. What's the purpose I BLM in its many hearings never once justified the move from a financial stand point. They admitted in their hearings, which allowed for little local Input, that the change would not reduce costs, would not reduce employee's, and could not prove that it in any way would be more efficient. Their singular defense was that it would be handier for the state and regional offices to have fewer districts. These districts, please note, were set up along multi -county government lines. Thereby perpetuating another bureaucratic organization, formed but not controlled by politicians. One by one the big powerful politicians went by the wayside. Gov.Rampton, and Sen. Moss were among the first to bow to the bureaucratic pressure from BLM. Howe and McKay were hopeless. State politicians like Dixie Leavitt. didn't even rate a nod. After the bureaucrats divided and conquered con-quered all but Sen. Garn and afewof us die-hards, die-hards, they went ahead and reorganized just like they told us they were going to do way back in January and February. Even Sec. Hathaway was unable to influence them or now that he too has joined the ranks of the bureaucratic society, didn't want to make waves. The same is true of the FCAG and is even more reason why it must be disbanded now. The Four Counties will be stronger than the Five Counties. With the lone dissenter (Iron County) no longeron the steering committee, com-mittee, the bureaucrats can mold their programs pro-grams to suit themselves. The local politicians are no match for their wily maneuvering. Even more, fewof them have the time to put up a real fight. They have to make a living. The FCAG bureaucrats bur-eaucrats win by default, just as BLM has won, because the rest of us just can't devote the time and money to fight. Bureaucrats don'thave these problems the time and money they expend belongs to the tax payers. And you'll never catch one of them workingovertime withoutpay, mileage mile-age and all expenses paid. And because they spend full time at spending tax dollars they honestly believe they know better how to spend them than do those of us that earn those tax dollars. "Red" |
