Show (Editor's Note: Following is the text of a letter written writ-ten by Mrs. Gladys Whitta-ker Whitta-ker to Karl Truman, President Presi-dent of the Beaver County Board of Education, following follow-ing the meeting held in Milford Mil-ford Wednesday evening. The letter, we feel, accurately sums up the reelings of the school patrons and taxpayers of Milford.) Dear Karl: I wanted to compliment you on your fine job in conducting the meeting held here Wednesday Wednes-day night. It scould have developed de-veloped into a very explosive situation. You handled it beautifully. beau-tifully. Personally, I was grateful grate-ful for the way you handled everything. Karl, you have worked with the people of Milford for many years. You know how vitally interested we are in education, we worked very hard throughout through-out the county in promoting the bond issue necessary to build the three elementary schools and upgrade the high schools. I'm sure in evaluating the expressions of opinion at the meeting you realize that the people feel we are not getting a fair share of consideration from the supervisory personnel of the district. It isn't a matter mat-ter of spending fifty cents here and fifty cents over there, but it is a matter of explaining the needs of both schools. Good public relations are a must in a program such as this. The Beaver school has had a fine radio training program for several years. We do not have this program because of lack of a teacher I understand. Last year an aviation program pro-gram was implemented at Beaver Bea-ver with the teacher receiving training to provide the program. pro-gram. Now again this year another vocational program (even larger) larg-er) is being considered for Beaver. This is expecting the people of Milford to be a lot more broad-minded than they are willing to be, and it's really quite a natural reaction to have them rebel. We have been in enough meetings with state officials over the past few years who have told us that we are livinij on borrowed time as far as retaining re-taining our separate high schools is concerned. We realize real-ize this and contemplate that changes will be made in the future. We can also see the advantages that consolidation might offer. It is the definite opinion of the people here that action on a program such as the one planned for Beaver should be tabled for discussion at a later date. There are developments in industry being planned for ' both sides of the county in the near future. Perhaps money from expanded growth will stabilize our school situatior so that vocational programs can be added to both schools. In either case, it is a matter due further consideration at a later date. We appreciate your concern for our community and desire to have a well rounded educational educa-tional program not just for our children but all the children of the county. We're just asking ask-ing for consideration of the needs of our children and their future development. Sincerely, Gladys Whittaker. |
