SPECIAL GATES REDUCE DEER LOSSES Smashed deer and car grills may soon be reduced on Utah highways by wildlife research aimed at thinning the 1,500 deer-vehicle accidents in the Beehive State- each yar. Rcent studies in Colorado have shown that a new type of one-way dee-r gate used in conjunction con-junction with 8 foot deer-proof fences will substantially lower deer losses due- to highway traffic. traf-fic. The gate is designed so deer may easily pass through in one direction but their movement is impeded in the opposite direction. di-rection. Even with a fence, cccassion-ally cccassion-ally deer may find their way onto the highway. This gate will allow them to leave the hazardous roadway but restrict their movements back onto it. The Division of Wildlife Resources Re-sources is working with the Highway Department to include the new type of gate along roads under construction where high deer mortality has cccur-ed cccur-ed in the past. Effectiveness of the gate in Utah will be eval-iated eval-iated at four sites north of Cedar Ce-dar City along the newest segments seg-ments of Interstate 15. The fence and gats will be included when new highway segments are constructed north of Fill-' more and between Clear Creek and Sevier Junction. |
