Show t The News was saddened to hear of the death of Mrs. Phyllis Phyl-lis Whittaker Monday morning. Phyllis was one of those rare people who found humor in most everything. She will be best remembered for the years of devoted service to the community com-munity through her work at the Milford Library and at the Milford High School. Homecoming at MHS will never be the same. She and her sister, Maigarct Scars have become be-come institutions at the Homecoming Home-coming As cirblies over these many years that they have em-ceed em-ceed these affairs. Phyllis wroto most of their jokes and routines, rou-tines, and to the delight of an- diences years after year, poked fun at local people, and laughed laugh-ed at herself. We were fortunate to meet her shortly after we arrived in Milford. We were looking for someone to write a historical histor-ical column, and naturally asked ask-ed the librarian. Phyllis, sai.l she would try, and she wrote the column, "Lo.king Back" right up to her death. Her sense of humor, and her willingness to help others will be sorely missed by all Mil-forditts. Mil-forditts. and especially those of us here at the News. o Well they did it again the Post Office last the Mii-errville Mii-errville News. It's not at all uncommon, for it to take two days for it to make the trip from Minersville to Milford. A distance of only 13 miles. But with the now efficiency now prevalent in the U.S. Postal Service, it m:st make this 13 miles by way of Provo. Our local pest offiC3 personnel tell us that this is where all tne mistakes are made. Anyway. a we s:.y. it has happened many times, but since it is usually mail d on Monday, we just hold that page open and burn a little midnight oil. a.nd s'ill get it in that week's New? On most hclidays, Daisy has either brought it to Milford or sent it wilh someone who wa; coming anyway, but this time efforts in this direction failed So dutifully. Daisy tried the mails. Put alas, it didn't arrive it will probably be in the b"x Thursday morninig, but too late for this week. Oh we'll still print it, but in next week's paper, a week late. Thanks to the good old U.S.P.S. o - We never did get our usuil Christmas letters' out, and we still have some Christmas presents pres-ents to mail It's difficult to pick the right time to mail fragile gifts, and we put off mailing this one until after the holidays, but in lieu of what happened to the Minersville News, maybe we had better wait a few more days. It's only going to Arizona, but, with the present routing system, it could be routed through Peking. It looks as if city hall may start the New Year off with a big hassle. Councilman Norm Thompson said Monday night that if he could, he would put a motion on the floor at the next meeting to revoke the gaming licenses, (meaning the card licenses) of the local pubs. Seems there have been some complaints by wives of some of our local sports, that they were gambling away the milk money. Norm wants to remove temptation. Actually, as near as this writer could determine, there was no proof that any gambling was taking place in these establishment, es-tablishment, but Norm says he doesn't need any he says the Council can revoke the licenses li-censes at any time without cause. It must be pointed out that the city does not lic?nse gambling, gamb-ling, only card games for entertainment. en-tertainment. A.ny gambling would be in violation of both city and state laws. It is unlikely that revocation of the card licenses at the local taverns would reduce gambling by any measure. Most likely, as prohibition did in the early twenties, it would force those so inclined, to move' behind closed doors, with their card games. And as long as they are breaking the law by playing play-ing cards, why not gamble too. o Regardless of whether or not you or I approve of gambling, Continued on Page Six HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN (Continued from Page One) legislation will not remove the temptation, only make it more sporting. If Councilman Thompson Thomp-son carries out his threat and the council supports him in his effort, the controversy will not end there. The community may well choose up sides, and I'm sure that a good percentage will pretend to be on both sides before it is all over. r |
