A vociferous minority finds the U. S. guilty of everything unpleasant that happens in the world. These critics imply that the sins of certain other nations Sould be allowed to get away with murder, wholesale murder. But they call us warmongers if we stand against invasion and fI S' 1955 and '56 in the Far East, in Taiwan, Hong Kong. Saigon and Bangkok. Clearly the Communists were trying to take over South Vietnam Viet-nam by guerrilla warfare, by assassination of village and town oficials who would not "cooperate." and similar terror tactics. They began thus before be-fore the first American soldier came anywhere near Vietnam. By invasion with weapons from the two Communist blocs, North Vietnam has kept intense pressure on the South from the DMZ to the southern coast. Small wonder that South Vietnam Viet-nam cannot act the part of a unfied, democratic nation There's a perverse attitude among some groups here that anybody who blames the Communists Com-munists for infiltration or aggression ag-gression is a horrible McCarthy-type fascist, a red-baiter a witch-hunter. But from first-hand observation and long research I know that fanatical factions in Moscow and Peking long to upset governments and take over wherever they can. They'd prefer to do It by exploiting ex-ploiting unruly elements in Southeast Aisa and elsewhere because that's cheaper than sending armies. But they can do that too as witneess Korea, Tibet, Hungary and others. If these elements had not lent encouragement and weapons wea-pons to North Vietnam in the recent massive invasion of South Vietnam, all our troops would soon have been out of Vietnam. But the revolutionaries revolution-aries do not want peace. They do want to disturb our domes-tie domes-tie affairs and foreign relations. Carlton Culmsee Professor Emeritus of American Civilization Utah State University Logan .Utah Dear Editor: Recently, Saturday, May 6 to be exact, I accompanied a group of young people on an outing to Ranch Canyon. This was my first opportunity to visit this particular picnic area and my first impression was that it needed a good cleaning up. The trash can was overflowing over-flowing and all sorts of debris : was laying around, including a deer head and other parts I assume had been there since ' the hunting season. Nevertheless, we had come ; to have a "cook-out" and we v all made the best of the situa-" situa-" tion by gathehring up some of the junk so we could set our table. We arrived there about 4:00. p.m.' and the young men had hauled in wood for the fireplace and had put the soda pop to cool. The young ladies fixed the hamburgers and hot dogs and prepared the table. We spent a couple fun hours laughing, eating, hiking and playing FrizzBee. Some of us sat around the fire and roasted marshmallows. The outing was most pleasant, the behavior of the young people peo-ple was fine. I feel that it was rather special to be invited to |
