Show UNSKILLED WOULD BE HURT There are some things in this world which simply cannot can-not be successfully legislated. For example, it does not appear wise to increase the minimum wage again by federal statute when that is the very reason why so many unskilled are not gainfully employed. em-ployed. Let's get down to basics. Wages are paid for work or service performed. When wages are increased, the cost of the work or service is also increased unless output also goes up. Then the law of supply and demand takes over. If the goods or services become "too costly" the buying market decreases. The result is a reduction in the production of such goods or in the furnishing of such services. This in evitably leads to a loss of jobs. Therefore, when Congress considers another escalation of the minimum wage statute it automatically slams the door on border-line raises in the job market. I The place to adjust wages is through bargaining be- i tween employer and employee or his delegated representa tives, rather than the enactment o flegislation, which is too often counter-productive. |
