Show Beaver County Students Better than National Scholastic Average I Students of the Beaver County Schools rate well above national normals in every subject. That was revealed when a survey recently made under direction di-rection of Bryce Draper, county coun-ty curriculum director, was tabulated. In .almost every instance, in-stance, the students rate well above the national norms, and in several instances they are doing work equivalent to a grade higher. Mental maturity tests (I.Q.) were used on each student, with detailed achievement tests following the maturity test. The California Achievement Test Battery was used, and each student was tested and graded according to overall ability, then each student was graded in each subject with minute accuracy, listing each phase of the subject in 100 sub-areas sub-areas and detailing the various components to determine the student's weaknesses and exceptional ex-ceptional accomplishments in that subject. In completing the study, a minimum of 50 hours' work was required of each teacher in the Beaver County schools. The tests showed that Beaver Beav-er County students are relatively rela-tively high in arithmetic reasoning, reas-oning, reading vocabulary, and mechanics of English. In these subjects the local students averaged a "gain" of 1.2 years over last year. Spelling is the weakest subject sub-ject in this county, and this will receive special attention during the coming year, Mr. Draper said. A ham dinner was served to the students stu-dents and their parents. Paul King, seminary principal, princi-pal, and Wallace Yardley, stake president, presented the seminary sem-inary pins to the graduates. Fourth-year students were also given a gift. A program was presented under direction of Tommy Walker. REGION TEN' MUSIC FESTIVAL Saturday, May 5. the band and chorus of MHS went to the Region Ten Music Festival to participate in their various fields. The band members played several concert numbers in the morning. Each band was individually indi-vidually judged on their playing play-ing ability while marching, routine performance, and general gen-eral appearance of dress and instruments. The chorus sang three songs: a warm-up number, required number, and a selective number. num-ber. Both groups represented the school in a pleasing and highly high-ly commendable manner.
