Show Legion Urges U S to Retain Loyalty Oath (Amer. Legion News Service) Members of The American Legion Le-gion and the Auxiliary are being -urged to contact their two U S Senators urging them to vote against S 2929, which would abolish abol-ish the loyalty oath provisions of the National Defense Education Act, National Legislative Director Miles D. Kennedy has reported. S 2929, introduced on Jan. 28 by John F. Kennedy (D., Mass.), was reported out favorably on Feb. 2 by the Senate Labor and Public Welfare Committee. No date was immediately set for its consideration on the floor of the Senate. The National Defense Education Educa-tion Act provides low-interest loans to needy, qualified students seeking education in institutions of higher learning. Under the present law, a needy, qualified student, as a final requirement for receiving this financial assistance, assist-ance, must sign an affidavit to the effect that he does not believe be-lieve in and is not a member of and does not support any organization organ-ization that believes in or teaches teach-es the overthrow of the United States Government by force or violence or bv anv illeeal or un- constitutional means. The National Legislative Bulletin Bul-letin of The American Legion, in its Jan. 15 issue, pointed out that many institutions of higher learning throughout the nation are making excellent use of the program. The publication also noted that the program enjoyed almost complete acceptance by j the students; that the complaints i concerning the loyalty oath came' not from the students but frony their teachers. I The American Legion supports the loyalty oath provisions of tl law on the theory it is a part e the enactments of Congress pni viding for the security of tbA United States and those receiv-J ing benefits under this law are special persons and as such loyalty to the United States, e their freedom from the taint ouy disloyalty is properly an issue. q |
