If no child, the widow was married to the veteran before or during his service; or, 3. If no child and if not married mar-ried before or during his service, serv-ice, she married him within 15 years after the duty period when the service-connected injury or disease that caused his death occurred; or, 4. If no cm id and if married more than 15 years after the . foregoing duty period, she was married to the veteran five or more years before his death. VA said the widow must have lived with the vefteran from the time of marriage until his death, except where separation was due to the misconduct of the husband, or was produced by the husband without fault on the part of the widow. VA said previous laws for service-connected deaths before January 1, 1957 generally provided pro-vided shorter periods within which the marriage must have been performed and do not establish es-tablish a widow's eligibility solely because a -child was born of the marriage. The greatest chapter of American Amer-ican Legion history remains to be written. The American Legion has grown into a three-war organization organ-ization of such dimensions in manpower, influence and grassr root stability that its future contributions con-tributions to community, state and nation will dwarf all of its record of services since 1919. But the great future destiny of The American Legion does not lie in nationwide concepts. A more liberal definition of the term "widow" is used to determine de-termine eligibility for compensation compen-sation payments to the survivor surviv-or of a veteran who dies of a service-connected cause on or after January 1, 1957. Veterans Administration said the new definition is established by the Survivor Benefits Act which became effectve January Janu-ary 1, 1957.
