Show November 27, 1933 Page 9 CHARTER MEMBERS OF ALPHA THETA CHOSEN Twelve charter members of Alpha Theta, a social club recently formed at Weber College, were given corsages of yellow rosebuds on November 15, when a week of initiation was ended by a semi-picnic lunch in the Weber gymnasium. The aim of the club is to further friendship and sup port college activities. Officers of the club, chosen at a meeting November 10, are: . Margaret Johnson, president; Winifred Laurie, vice-president; Aline Smedlcy, secretary and treasurer; and Heleri I.indquist,. reporter. Mrs. Clark, girls' athletic director, is the club advisor. The date of the formal initiation has not been set. o ENGINEERS' CLUB PROGRESSING The engineering students have organized with William Ogden as president and Jack Vranizan and Paul Gilgen as assistants. The first activity was an assembly which "edified the aesthetic side of the listeners' natures." Th is was followed by an outing two weeks ago. Professors Gray and Stevenson, despite their learned looks, could not make the cider pour forth from the barrel until some student suggested that the barrel be punctured. The officers say that is but a beginning. The club plans more activities soon. o LECTURE ON HAWTHORNE DELIVERED The first of a scries of lectures on literature sponsored by the English club was given Monday, Nov., 20, by David Trevithick of the English department on the subject, "The Probable Fate of the Souls of the Major Characters in 'The Scarlet Letter' in the Light of Hawthorne's General Attitude Toward the Moral Issues." He summarized Hawthorne's beliefs about the soul and immortality and about the effects and proper punishment of sin. He said that Hawthorne called sins wicked according to the widencss of consequence rather than according to the nature, thus making deliberate fraud the worst and personal vice the least of sins. o THOUGHTS Manhood, not scholarship, is the first aim of education.
