Show November 13, 1933 Page 3 WEBER OBSERVES EDUCATION WEEK The observance of the thirteenth annual American Edu-..tion Week, November 6-12, 1933, was focused upon the i .intemmce of free and universal education as an American I ;al. The great number of schools in the United States at are closed and the country-wide handicap because of ,:k of funds caused the National Education Association to t ike "Meeting the Emergency in Education" the theme of Education Week this year. In Monday's assembly, Raymond Holmes discussed the :i iture of the emergency. He pointed out that the bonded indebtedness of our schools is too high and that many leaders f ave been guilty of extravagance. "But," he said, "School tienscs are not out of proportion to other expenditures of t ie state, as critics have claimed." In an address over KLO Thursday evening on "The Emergency in Education," John Benson, head of the Edu-.ition department, asked, "Why not Federal Relief for hools?" He stated that, while we have been spending noney during the depression on roads, buildings, banks, In-4 tstry, etc., we have reduced the money spent on education .. only three percent of the national income. Friday morning Kathleen Foulger spoke on "Increased Responsibility of Schools." "Social orders are never stationary; ' lerefore. educational methods must change with them." The chools must aid the church and the home in "striving to ir -.Kp ethics on the level plane" and to "direct of student to e best use of leisure time," she said. The State Board of Education visited Weber Friday in the interests of education week. Mr. Burton K. Farnsworth, f the state educational staff, urged Weber, in becoming a :rt of the state education system, not to "lose much that lias been highly desirable in the traditions of this school."
