Show Senate Wednesday, April 6, 2005 The Signpost Page 12 continued from front votes for the office they are running for, they shall be declared the winner. In the case of a certified tie, the decision of who is elected is to be determined by a super-majority vote during the first regularly scheduled senate meeting following elections. "After disqualifications, what we had to do was go down the list and look at the write-in votes for each of the offices," Medina said. There were several ties with write-in vote candidates. "In some of the instances we had a situation where a number of individuals received the same amount of write-in votes," Medina said, "and so technically that is considered a tie, and it will be determined by a supermajority vote of the WSUSA Student Senate." Medina and elections committee chairman Casey Garner have attempted to notify the write-in candidates in order to determine if the candidates are interested in the positions they were written in for "Some people aren't even eligible because they don't even want the position," Garner said. Medina said a number of the write-in candidates were shocked to find out they were in the running for a senate position. Due to the difficulty in notifying some of the candidates, the tie positions will be voted upon during next week's senate meeting. Health Professions Senator Zane Williams said he thinks it is a disgrace to the student body to disqualify a candidate who was given a majority of votes. The internal affairs committee of the Student Senate is looking at alternative ways to mandate that students must turn in a financial report instead of disqualification. The residence halls senator position was given to Rosie Jones, and the COAST senator position was given to Christopher Lim. They both received the most write-in votes for their positions. Medina said there were ties for the Asian/Polynesian, Honors/BIS and veteran senator positions. The students with disabilities, African American and Native American senator positions will be filled through an interview/ application process. Gay and lesbian discrimination During the issues forum section of senate meeting, where anyone in attendance can present issues to be discussed and assigned to committees, WSU student Cari Bohm presented the issue of discrimination against gays and lesbians on campus. Business and Economics Senator Josh Borges asked her if she could be specific in the types of discrimination. "In some ways I am talking outward and also inward," Bohm said. "Like when they "In some ways I am talking outward and also inward. Like when they sit in classes and hear how homosexuality is evil and also being called a fag on campus or being called a dyke on campus/' - Cari Bohm, WSU student sit in classes and hear how homosexuality is evil and also being called a fag on campus or being called a dyke on campus." The task of investigating gay and lesbian discrimination on campus was assigned to the campus community and student affairs committees of the senate. Those committees will report on their progress Monday, April 11. Barry Gomberg, WSU freedom of speech and affirmative action director, suggested that the senators visit the weekly Gay and Straight Alliance meetings to gain an understanding of the types of discrimination that are going on at WSU. "I know from time to time I get complaints in my office from faculty who make extremely derogatory remarks about sexual orientation," Gomberg said. "That may or may not violate policy depending whether or not they single out specific students." Gomberg said he admires the senate's willingness to look into the situation. Potential parking pass increases Borges said that was just a survey to see what students thought. "The process had all ready been agreed to by us," Borges said; "... that's already been set and decided regardless of what students felt." Borges announced that the parking committee discussed the increase of parking passes beginning August of 2005. "We had a vote this last week on whether or not to raise parking passes," Borges said.
