Show Page 9 The Signpost Wednesday, December 8, 2004 Education continued from front semester the committee will push to get students' input by involving them in focus groups. "We want to keep students informed and involved," Burton said. "We want to set up forums where people can be heard." Graduation requirements include some general education. In order to graduate, students must complete core and breadth requirements. The committee is assessing the goals of the university and the expected outcome of the students to see if the current general education curriculum meets those goals. "One of the questions we ask is, 'What is a well-rounded student?'" Burton said. "This is what we consider when we look at the curriculum." WSU faces a unique challenge with general education requirements because of its open enrollment policy. Unlike some universities in Utah, WSU doesn't place restrictions on applying students' ACT or SAT scores. If scores fall below what is needed, students are still accepted to WSU but must take remedial courses. "We have a broader spread of preparation of high school students," Burton said. "Some students are more prepared than others. It's a challenge bringing students up to speed." Whether the open enrollment policy hurts or helps WSU is a matter of personal opinion. "Some of the pluses are, we provideopponunitiesforstudents who might not otherwise have them," Burton said. "The negative is, it puts pressure on the faculty to do more." Burton said more remedial courses have to be offered. "I believe one of the real pluses of WSU is we provide a broader range of students the opportunity to earn a degree and start a career," Burton said. The completion of the committee's recommendations isn't expected until the end of 2005. "We still have a ways to go," Johns said. "Hopefully, we will have some preliminary plans at the end of spring semester. I don't anticipate it will be a big change." You can reach reporter Heather Hunt-Wood by calling 626-7655.
